Flags at Oostende
The Kent Venture Boat Trust was formed in 1981 when several youth centres in Kent invested in the purchase of a Dutch barge with the objective of providing recreational facilities for young people. The barge was named “Petra” after the previous owners daughter, and the participating youth centres used her at a reduced rate.

Our target user groups are still Kent County Council Youth Service youth centres and school groups.

However we would like to attract young persons from a wider area, with the same preferential rates, and hope this web site will help us achieve this.
A list of user groups is on the KVB page - follow the link to Bed Nights
In addition to providing a venue for youngsters we cater for adult groups who would like to enjoy our unique experience.

For example, one of our fully organised golf breaks, a family outing, or a group of people from your club or organisation.

Adult groups help with our income, keep the project viable, and are allowed - within reason - by the Charity Commissioners.

Oostende is less than an hours drive from Ypres Salient - the home of many horrifying battles during the 4 years of the Great War.
Most of the youngsters in our user groups have studied the war at school and are keen to see the area at first hand.
Our tour usually takes in Ypres and the in Flanders Field museum, Essex farm cemetery - where John McCrae wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’, Tyne Cot cemetery, Talbot House and the Last  Post at the Menin Gate which is played every night at 8pm.
Every year Colin’s cousins, all now in their 50’s, hold a reunion.  The first year it was in Kent, and last year was on board New Petra cruising from Terneuzen to Oostende.

Fortunately there were many good hostelries on the way, and  a new one was tried nearly every night!

The last day included a trip to some of the first world war battlefields and the last post at the Menin Gate.

Contact us if you would like to use New Petra for a family group.
